I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of President S R Nathan. Not only was he an accomplished public servant, diplomat and President, but he was also one of the kindest and most generous people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. His advice on where the Singapore-U.S. relationship has been, is and where it can go was invaluable as I began my time as Ambassador three years ago. I cherish his words of advice more today than ever.
On a personal note, on a number of times when I was at events, I could find my wife Crystal laughing in the corner with President Nathan and neither would tell me about what. He lived as a giant and will live on in so many hearts forever. Rest in Peace. Thank you for your warmth, wisdom and service.
