We are pleased to announce that Singaporean performance artist Lee Wen is the winner of the 2016 Joseph Balestier Award for the Freedom of Art. Best known for his “Yellow Man” series of work, Lee is one of the pioneers of performance art in Singapore. His work is motivated by a strong conviction of justice and idealism, with a persistence to stay true to the self in a highly structured world.
Ambassador Wagar said: “There is no stronger voice for freedom of expression in art than Lee Wen, who has spent his life speaking truth to power.”
Aye Ko from Myanmar and Nguyen Trinh Thi from Vietnam were also finalists for the award.
