AUKUS Annoucement Overview
On March 13, President Biden, alongside UK Prime Minister Sunak and Australian Prime Minister Albanese, announced Australia’s acquisition of conventionally armed, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs) under the Australia, United Kingdom, and United States (AUKUS) partnership. The trilateral security partnership “AUKUS” was formed by Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States as part of modernizing our existing alliances and partnerships. AUKUS is guided by a shared commitment to global security and stability, AUKUS deepens diplomatic, security, and defense cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region to meet the challenges of the twenty-first century.
We know that much of the history of the 21st century will be written in the Indo-Pacific, which is why it is critical for us to deepen cooperation on new and emerging areas of interest. AUKUS will allow partner countries to enhance their ability to safeguard the critical industries and networks that exist across the Indo-Pacific region.
